Guys my blog posts haven’t been on their normal schedule this week and I apologize!  I try to get my new posts out Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 6am Pacific Time.  I started a new routine getting up at 5a every day so my scheduling has been a little off, but bear with me!  There will be a new post up on Friday ALL about my favorite hidden gem taco spot in Culver City, so get excited!  Now I bring you….drum roll…super easy homemade hemp milk!  You’re probably saying, “can’t I just buy it?”  C’mon, you know what I always say…yes, and no!  And here’s why.

I am not anti-dairy by any means, but I do try to limit straight cows milk.  With that said, I have struggled with nut milks because they don’t always add much in terms of nutritional value.  Further, many commercial nut milks have added sugars or carrageenan*.  I could make my own nut milk, and I am definitely not opposed to that!  But have you ever looked into making nut milk before?  It sounds exhausting!  You have to soak the nuts overnight, have a high-speed blender, squeeze the pulp with cheese cloth, and ultimately either throw out the pulp (waste) or dry it and use it as nut flour (another step).  And high-quality organic nuts are expensive!  I know all of that might not deter everyone (more power to you!), but with my busy schedule, homemade nut milk just isn’t going to happen.

I was on a mission to find a better alternative to  cow’s milk and nut milks and stumbled upon hemp milk.  After much research, I am so happy to learn about all of the nutrition packed into those tiny seeds.  Hemp milk is full of vitamins, minerals, it contains 10 essential amino acids (vegetarians and vegans this protein is for you!), and healthy omega 3’s and 6’s.  Plus, it is way creamy i.e. dreamy!

Even better, homemade hemp milk is WAY easier to make than nut milk!  No soaking or cheese cloth required, and you have complete control of what goes in it.  There are just 5 minutes between you and creamy homemade hemp milk!  I added a touch of agave to mine along with some vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt.  Y.  U.  M.  I used my Nutribullet and couldn’t believe the results!  The milk turned out super frothy!

This easy homemade hemp milk is great for smoothies, coffee, cereal, overnight oats, chia pudding…pretty much everything you would use your nut milk for!  I haven’t tried hemp milk in baking, but it’s on my list of kitchen experiments.  I’ll report back when I do!

Easy Homemade Hemp Milk

Print Recipe
Serves: Makes 2 Cups Cooking Time: 5 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup hemp seeds
  • 2 cups of filtered water
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp, or to taste, agave or other sweetener
  • pinch of sea salt

Instructions

Add all ingredients to a blender and turn on high for 60-90 seconds until creamy. Store homemade hemp milk in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

OPTIONAL: Strain milk through a fine mesh strainer if you don't want any little hemp pulp.

Notes

I NEVER strain my hemp milk, but you certainly can if you don't want any pulp or fiber in your milk. Straining is a personal preference and totally optional!
